Sultan Nazrin flags off over 4,000 participants for Run for Tigers

Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah of Perak, along with Raja Permaisuri Perak Tuanku Zara Salim, officiated the Run for Tigers: The Long Run event in Putrajaya, releasing over 4,000 participants. The run, held in observance of World Tiger Day, is a joint initiative by WWF-Malaysia and Maybank.

The program aims to heighten public awareness regarding conservation efforts for the Malayan tiger, the nation's iconic species now classified as Critically Endangered. This year's event also celebrates a decade of strategic partnership between WWF-Malaysia and Maybank, which has focused on protecting the Malayan tiger through various conservation initiatives. These include habitat protection, wildlife monitoring, community engagement, and public awareness programs.

Run for Tigers provides an opportunity for us to appreciate the collective efforts of rangers, Orang Asli communities, government agencies, partners, and supporters who have kept hope alive for the survival of this iconic species.

According to WWF-Malaysia, the encouraging public turnout coincides with positive signs in Malayan tiger conservation. Camera traps in Royal Belum recorded the presence of a tiger cub in 2022 and again in 2025. Over the past 10 years of collaboration, the number of rangers has grown from 12 to 150, and over 500 camera traps have been installed to bolster protection efforts in key Malayan tiger habitats.

Sophia Lim, Executive Director and CEO of WWF-Malaysia, stated that while challenges persist, the early signs of recovery demonstrate the effectiveness of conservation efforts. "Run for Tigers provides an opportunity for us to appreciate the collective efforts of rangers, Orang Asli communities, government agencies, partners, and supporters who have kept hope alive for the survival of this iconic species," she said. The participation of over 4,000 Malaysians sends a clear message about the public's commitment to protecting the nation's natural heritage and supporting impactful conservation initiatives.
