Summer Begins with Heatwave and Severe Thunderstorm Warnings in Germany

Germany is bracing for a hot start to summer, with the first day of the season on June 21 expected to bring scorching temperatures and the threat of severe thunderstorms. The German Weather Service (DWD) forecasts highs between 31 and 34 degrees Celsius, with a significant risk of storms bringing gale-force winds, hail, and heavy rainfall of up to 40 liters per square meter in a short period.

Many people sought to escape the sweltering heat over the weekend by heading to lakes and outdoor pools. Cities are also deploying misting systems in public spaces like Berlin's Mauerpark and Cottbus to offer some respite. Public drinking fountains are also being utilized to help citizens cope with the intense warmth.

However, the hot weather is not without its dangers. Saturday afternoon saw thunderstorms trigger flash floods in parts of Brandenburg, while lightning strikes caused fires. Emergency services also responded to fallen trees. A storm even interrupted a city festival in Cottbus, forcing a pause in the stage program due to heavy rain. Cottbus had recorded the highest temperature in Brandenburg on Friday at 36.2 degrees Celsius.

The extreme heat also poses a challenge for infrastructure, with road surfaces being tested. Traffic disruptions occurred on the A13 autobahn between Duben and Freiwalde due to road damage caused by the heat.
