Sun Pharma Recalls 11 Eye Medicines in India Amid Contamination Concerns

Sun Pharma, a major supplier of medicines to Sri Lanka, has voluntarily withdrawn 11 of its eye medicine products from the Indian market. This precautionary action was taken in July, following an alert issued by the All India Ophthalmological Society regarding patient safety. The Economic Times reported on the development.

The All India Ophthalmological Society, representing nearly 27,000 eye specialists across India, informed its members on June 19 about concerns regarding bacterial contamination found in specific batches of Sun Pharma's 'Pred Forte' eye drops. These drops are prescribed for conditions ranging from allergic reactions causing red eyes and itching to more severe eye infections.

Following the initial recall of "Pred Forte" batches, Sun Pharma was instructed on July 17 to withdraw an additional 11 eye medications as a further safety measure. The affected products include Depopred ml 2, Brinolar (BKC free), Brinzotim eye drops ml 5 (BKC free), Lotepred ml 5, Lotepred 1% eye drops ml 5, Lotepred LS 0.2% eye drops ml 5, Lotepred T, Neplact OD eye drops ml 3, Neplact-C, Neplact eye drops ml 5, and Toba-F.

When contacted, a representative from a company that imports Sun Pharma products into Sri Lanka stated they had no knowledge of such a recall. However, Gaurav Chugh, Sun Pharma's Global Head of Communications, assured that none of the eye medicines recalled from the Indian market have been imported into Sri Lanka.
