Supreme Court to Hear Vyšniauskas's Appeal in 'Check' Case

The Supreme Court of Lithuania has accepted a cassation appeal from former member of parliament Andrius Vyšniauskas. This appeal requests the court to review previous decisions concerning his conviction for fraud, abuse of office, and document forgery. The case stems from falsified documents related to councilor expenses.

Vyšniauskas is seeking to have his conviction overturned entirely or for the case to be returned for a new trial. The appellate court had previously upheld the guilty verdict but reduced the imposed fine from 7,500 euros to 6,500 euros. Additionally, he faces a three-year prohibition from holding public office.

The courts found Vyšniauskas guilty of fraud, abuse of power, and document forgery concerning tampered expense documents submitted to the Marijampolė municipality administration. The appellate court specifically ruled that he remained convicted only for fuel expenses, a sum he obtained fraudulently. This amount was reduced from 2,190 euros to 1,311 euros by the appellate court.

The Supreme Court will examine the case through a written procedure. The outcome of this appeal could significantly impact Vyšniauskas's political future and his standing regarding public trust.
