Susan Sarandon says she is losing roles for supporting Palestine

Susan Sarandon says major film studios effectively shut out supporters of Palestine, even as American public opinion becomes less favorable toward U.S. support for Israel.

Speaking at the Venice Film Festival, the 79-year-old Oscar winner said it was “impossible” for large studios to hire people who support Palestine. She also said she continues to lose acting opportunities because of her outspoken support for Palestine and criticism of Israel’s conduct.

Sarandon is in Venice to present The Echo Chamber, directed by Andrea Pallaoro and adapted from the final screenplay by Italian filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci. Alicia Vikander and Luca Marinelli also star in the film, which is competing against 20 other entries for the Golden Lion, to be awarded on September 12.

At a press conference, Sarandon said many people had been surprised to learn how much money the United States provides to Israel. The festival audience gave her a long ovation.
