Suspect arrested in Luque for student assault

A 30-year-old man was arrested in Luque, Paraguay, on the night of August 11, 2026, pursuant to an arrest warrant related to an aggravated robbery investigation. The suspect, Jonathan Ramón Medina Gire, was apprehended around 8:50 PM in the Tres de Mayo neighborhood. Police confirmed he had an active warrant issued on July 6 by prosecutor Cecilia Núñez.

The investigation began in March following a robbery report. According to police chief Gustavo Paiva, closed-circuit television footage and witness accounts of the suspect fleeing were instrumental in his identification. Paiva indicated that other similar incidents have been reported, and some victims may have been hesitant to directly identify the suspect due to fear.

Paiva described the suspect as allegedly operating primarily in the early morning hours and resorting to violence to commit robberies. "Because of the fear he generates, people no longer wish to report him," Paiva stated, highlighting coordinated efforts with the Public Ministry. The arrest was made possible by information from neighborhood commissions.

Medina Gire denies being the perpetrator seen in the CCTV footage, arguing that the recording only shows a hooded figure from behind, making identification uncertain. He claims he was singled out due to his addiction.
