Suspect in Berlin attack had prior convictions for assault, extortion, and terror preparation

Abdul Ballout, a 21-year-old German citizen of Lebanese descent, is the suspect in a deadly attack in Berlin that left one person dead and 29 injured. Ballout had a documented history of criminal activity, including prior convictions for assault, extortion, and preparing acts of violence against state security. According to the Berlin Public Prosecutor's Office and the Higher Court of Appeal, he was sentenced in February 2022 for a 2019 assault and for extortion offenses committed in 2020.

Further complicating the case, Ballout was convicted on May 12 of this year under the juvenile criminal code for preparing a serious act of violence against state security. During that judicial process, his intention to join the Islamic State terrorist organization was established. This objective had led him to attempt travel to Syria in 2025, but he was apprehended in Lebanon during his journey.

In Lebanon, Ballout served a three-month sentence for inciting religious and confessional conflict. He returned to Germany in late 2025, where authorities arrested him at Berlin airport based on the existing charges. The prosecution had sought a more severe, non-suspended sentence in the May conviction, highlighting the perceived severity of his past actions and intentions.
