Suspect in deadly 2010 Marfin bank attack extradited from UK to Greece

A 46-year-old woman, accused of involvement in a fatal 2010 attack on a Marfin bank branch, has been brought to Greece from Britain to face charges. She arrived Thursday night accompanied by officers from the Hellenic Police's homicide division and was held overnight at the Attica General Police Directorate.

Her appearance before the prosecutor today, Friday, will initiate the process of executing an international arrest warrant. She will then be referred to the investigating judge handling the case to provide her testimony regarding the charges she faces. For the past six years, the woman resided in Brighton, England, where she raised a family and has two children. Police indicate she was captured on video footage on the day of the Marfin bank arson, May 5, 2010, with her face obscured. She is alleged to have played a supporting role within a group of anti-establishment individuals who broke the bank's glass facade and threw incendiary materials inside.

The suspect's arrest occurred at Gatwick Airport early Monday, July 13, shortly before she was to board a flight to Athens. Interpol had issued a red notice at the request of Greek authorities. Her extradition process to Greece began immediately. Upon learning she was named in the case file, she contacted homicide officers, proclaiming her innocence and expressing a desire to explain herself to the justice system.

Homicide officers uncovered new information regarding the Marfin case through advanced artificial intelligence analysis conducted by forensic laboratories. This analysis yielded specific data on suspects, including their build, clothing, and accessories. According to the police, the 46-year-old woman was identified by her height, hair, ears, clothing, shoes, and backpack. She is believed to have stood next to the man who smashed the bank's window. The available footage shows her in a supporting role near the storefront during the Molotov cocktail attacks.

Authorities believe the woman, along with two other arrested individuals, belonged to an anti-establishment group that systematically entered the Marfin bank on May 5, 2010. This raid resulted in the deaths of three people, including a pregnant woman. During protests in central Athens, masked individuals set fire to the Marfin branch on Stadiou Street, broke the glass, and threw Molotov cocktails, while trapped employees pleaded for help. The group had planned the roles, with specific individuals assigned to throw Molotov cocktails and others to support the operation. Two 42-year-old men are considered the main defendants; one allegedly coordinated the group and gave instructions for the attack.
