Suspect in girlfriend's assault attempted suicide, police say

Taufik Hidayat, a suspect in the alleged imprisonment and assault of his girlfriend, is being held in a special isolation cell by West Java Regional Police. This measure comes after investigators learned Hidayat had previously attempted suicide during his pursuit by authorities.

Authorities described Hidayat's alleged actions towards the victim, identified by the initials YTR, 29, as "emotional abuse." They explained that the suspect used intense affection to manipulate and then isolate the victim, preventing her from interacting with others. This possessiveness, fueled by jealousy, reportedly led to severe psychological and physical pressure on YTR.

Hidayat, 30, is a repeat offender, having previously served 1 year and 4 months for violence against a woman in Bandung. West Java Regional Police have appealed for information regarding any other potential victims.

The victim was brought to Hasan Sadikin General Hospital on June 10 by Hidayat and a boarding house attendant. Doctors noted extensive, heavily infected wounds on her head, with maggots present. A team of 40 doctors is planning reconstructive surgery for her face, including the mouth, nose, and cheeks, which is expected to take over three months. While her condition has improved, allowing her to sit and communicate, YTR has not yet been able to provide a statement to investigators due to trauma. Her legal counsel expressed concern about the psychological impact of her prolonged ordeal.
