The police had previously stated that the suspect was located inside the computer room of the educational institution, identified by local media as Debisirin Secondary School, situated about 15 kilometers northwest of the capital.

Access to firearms is relatively easy for military and police personnel, and civilian regulations for acquiring weapons are described as lax and outdated. This incident follows a previous shooting in February where the principal of a school in Hat Yai, southern Thailand, was killed after a man opened fire and took teachers and students hostage before they were later released.
