Suspect with Islamist Ties Sought After Deadly Attack on Berlin Pride Parade

A deadly attack marred Berlin's annual Pride Parade on Saturday evening when a car drove into a crowd in the Tiergarten park, killing one woman and injuring at least 16 others. The incident occurred near the Brandenburg Gate and Potsdamer Platz during the city's Christopher Street Day celebrations, one of Europe's largest LGBTQ+ events.

Witnesses reported that a white van deliberately targeted the festival-goers. Following the attack, organizers and police urged attendees to disperse and return home. Security forces cordoned off the area around Potsdamer Platz, and special police units, along with helicopters, were deployed. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz was kept informed of the situation.

Authorities confirmed the death of one woman at the scene due to severe injuries. Among the injured, at least three are in critical condition, eight have severe injuries, and five sustained minor injuries. Thirty individuals received psychological support following the traumatic event. The Berlin police spokesperson, Florian Nath, stated that the investigation is ongoing.

Further complicating the investigation, police announced that the suspected perpetrator has ties to local Islamist extremist circles. The suspect was identified as 21-year-old Abdul B., who is known to police. A nationwide manhunt is underway, and authorities have issued a warrant, warning the public that the suspect is considered armed and dangerous. Police conducted searches, including an apartment in the Schöneberg district, but the suspect was not apprehended. The investigation is proceeding under the charge of an act of terrorism.
