Suspected Hamas member's phone scrutinized in terror plot investigation; probes extend to Cyprus

Greek counter-terrorism authorities are scrutinizing the digital footprint of a 37-year-old Palestinian man, who has allegedly confessed to being a Hamas member preparing a bombing targeting an Israeli entity. The investigation is focused on his communications and contacts to determine the scope of a network potentially planning attacks across Europe.

Central to the inquiry are the suspect's mobile phone and other digital devices, which investigators are meticulously examining for evidence of his communication network. Authorities are pursuing information suggesting the arrested man maintained contact with two Palestinians apprehended in Cyprus. Sources indicate that one of the individuals arrested in Cyprus allegedly sent funds to the 37-year-old for the purchase of materials to construct explosive devices. Further investigation reveals that the 37-year-old and one of the Cypriot detainees reportedly trained together at a Hamas camp in Malaysia, where they allegedly received instruction on building improvised explosive devices using chemicals and materials obtainable online.

Meanwhile, Cypriot authorities are proceeding with the prosecution of two Palestinians, aged 32 and 38, who face serious terrorism charges. Investigators are exploring the possibility that these individuals were not acting alone but constituted an organized Hamas cell within Cyprus. The 32-year-old, a resident of Larnaca, has reportedly admitted to preparing terrorist attacks, while the 38-year-old is reportedly not cooperating with authorities. Security services in Cyprus are examining the potential existence of a broader network, suggesting the four individuals involved may be part of a larger operational structure in the region.
