Suspects arrested in deadly Salsa on St. Clair shooting, Toronto police chief says

Toronto police have apprehended the individuals responsible for a fatal shooting that disrupted the Salsa on St. Clair street festival. Police Chief Myron Demkiw confirmed the arrests late Wednesday evening, expressing gratitude to the homicide team for their relentless work on the case.

"This is very much breaking as we speak," Demkiw stated during an unrelated news conference on Thursday, indicating that further information would be shared on Friday to avoid compromising the ongoing investigation. He assured the public that the force would provide details once they could be disclosed.

The shooting incident took place on July 11 during the popular street festival, which had drawn an estimated 13,000 attendees. Police described the event as "targeted," identifying the deceased as 25-year-old Shaquan Quashie and 20-year-old Cesar Vernaza. Four other individuals sustained injuries and were hospitalized.

In the wake of the violence, the second day of the annual festival, which celebrates Latin culture, food, and music, was canceled. The investigation into the shooting has been a top priority for the Toronto Police Service.
