Trucking, transportation businesses cautioned of ‘large-scale fraud’: RCMP

Trucking and transportation businesses across Western Canada are being targeted by a sophisticated fraud scheme involving fraudulent credit cards, the Saskatchewan RCMP has warned. At least twelve businesses in Saskatchewan have been victimized by the alleged scam, which began to be investigated in March. The modus operandi involves fraudsters calling companies, including fuel distributors, automotive suppliers, and tire shops, to purchase items such as truck tires, engine oil, or trailer parts. They offer payment via credit card over the phone, and the transaction often appears "approved and pending." Prompted by this apparent approval, the businesses courier the goods to the customer. However, after the items are shipped, the credit card is declined, and no payment is received. The RCMP noted that fraudsters may possess multiple cards and advised businesses to be wary if the initial payment method is declined. They also cautioned against proceeding with shipments for suspicious transactions until they are verified. The investigation is ongoing and extends across provincial borders, with related incidents identified throughout Western Canada. Police are collaborating with other jurisdictions and urge any defrauded companies, including non-transportation businesses that may have also been targeted, to come forward. No charges have been laid yet, but authorities hope to prevent further victimization.
