Sweden: Cargo ship captain to be detained after fatal collision

Swedish authorities are seeking to detain the captain of a cargo ship involved in a fatal collision with a recreational boat off the west coast near Tjörn. The incident, which occurred Wednesday evening, resulted in the deaths of a mother and her child.

The family's father and another child were seriously injured in the collision. Their condition was reported as stable on Saturday morning. According to Swedish broadcaster SVT, the Norwegian-flagged cargo ship had a Russian crew, and the captain, who is suspected of manslaughter and endangering maritime traffic, is also Russian.

The Swedish Maritime Administration successfully recovered the sunken recreational boat from a depth of 20 to 30 meters. The Swedish Accident Investigation Board is investigating the incident, and the wreckage is expected to be crucial for the investigation.

Media reports indicate that the father and the surviving child were in stable condition as of Saturday morning.
