Sweden: One killed in school sword attack

A fatal sword attack at a school in Fagersta, central Sweden, has left the community reeling. Authorities confirmed one person died and several others were injured in the assault on Friday. Police swiftly apprehended an 18-year-old male suspect after a confrontation in which he was shot.

The Brinellskola, a secondary school with approximately 450 students aged 16 to 20, was the scene of the incident. Police received the call around 2 p.m. local time, shortly after the school had reopened following the summer break. Emergency services, including ambulances, police vehicles, and a helicopter, responded to the scene. Nearby schools and public buildings were placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure.

He acknowledged that the motive behind the attack was not yet known but assured the public that police were investigating intensively. This incident adds to a concerning pattern of attacks at educational institutions in Sweden. In February 2025, ten people were killed at an adult education center in Orebro, and in March 2022, two teachers were fatally stabbed by a student at a Malmo high school.
