Swedish PM: Sentence discount is an insult to victims

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer have sharply criticized the Social Democrats' decision to vote against the government's proposal to abolish sentence discounts for repeat offenders. Kristersson described the opposition's stance as "incomprehensible" and "primarily an insult to crime victims."

The government, along with its Tidö partners, is pushing to end the practice of reducing sentences for individuals convicted of multiple crimes. Kristersson stated that a broad agreement on this issue would send a stronger signal to criminals considering coming to Sweden. He expressed regret over the Social Democrats' decision, noting that it aligns them with the Left Party, Centre Party, and Green Party in opposing the measure.

The Social Democrats, however, argue that the proposal lacks sufficient funding and a clear implementation date, suggesting it could take until 2040 to take effect. They have proposed a phased approach, starting with sexual offenses. The opposition has submitted a joint reservation ahead of the parliamentary vote, highlighting these concerns.

Honestly, this is completely incomprehensible, given how much they have tried to say that they also want to be tough on those who commit crimes in Sweden.

Kristersson dismissed the idea that the debate is a "desperate attempt" by the government to win votes, asserting that his party is focused on "real politics" and disagrees with the opposition's stance on sentence discounts. He also mentioned that a separate proposal on family reunification is also before parliament.
