Swiss Sprinter Timothé Mumenthaler Claims Bronze in 200m at European Championships

Swiss athlete Timothé Mumenthaler has secured a bronze medal in the 200-meter race at the European Championships held in Birmingham. This achievement adds to his impressive continental record, following his sensational gold medal victory in Rome in 2024.

Mumenthaler shared the bronze medal with Italy's Eseosa Fostine Desalu, both clocking a time of 20.26 seconds, with the thousandths of a second not even separating them. The race was won by Germany's Owen Ansah in 19.95 seconds, marking the first time in 40 years a German man has won this distance. Great Britain's Zharnel Hughes claimed the silver medal, also finishing with the same time as Mumenthaler and Desalu.

Competing from lane four, the 23-year-old Mumenthaler faced a physical challenge, with his energy reserves noticeably depleted after a demanding 100-meter race earlier. Despite this, he demonstrated competitiveness in the crucial moments, running a clean curve and maintaining composure under pressure in the final 50 meters.

"I want to be satisfied with a medal, even though I had bigger ambitions," Mumenthaler told SRF in an interview. He added that he could show his consistency and was particularly pleased with his semifinal performance of 20.09 seconds. Notably, the gold medalist Owen Ansah is currently facing a doping investigation. Another Swiss competitor, William Reais, finished eighth in the final with a time of 20.68 seconds.
