Symbol of solidarity with Ukraine disappears. Kosovo's sharp reaction to Zelenskyy's words

Kosovo authorities removed a large flag bearing the inscription "Free Ukraine" from the center of the capital, Pristina, on Sunday. This action followed statements made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy regarding Kosovo's independence during his visit to Belgrade.

Pristina Mayor Perparim Rama stated that Kosovo deserves respect and that while solidarity with nations experiencing war and persecution is important, it cannot be built on undermining Kosovo's statehood or the sacrifices of its people. He emphasized that Pristina's reaction is a consistent response when Kosovo is not shown respect.

Kosovo must be respected. When Kosovo is not respected, the capital – Pristina – always reacts the same way. Our empathy and solidarity will always be with the nations facing war, violence, and persecution. Because we know – better than many others – what the fight for freedom, dignity, and the right to exist as a state means. However, no cause or policy can be built on the depreciation of Kosovo's statehood and the sacrifice of its people.

Zelenskyy, during his first official visit to Belgrade on Saturday, reaffirmed Ukraine's consistent position of not recognizing Kosovo's independence. He stressed that Ukraine respects Serbia's territorial integrity and international law. Kosovo, a former Serbian province, declared independence in 2008.

Despite Kyiv's non-recognition of Kosovo's statehood, Pristina has aligned with European and American sanctions against Russia over the war in Ukraine. Kosovo has also provided refuge to Ukrainian journalists fleeing the conflict. The "Free Ukraine" flag was initially erected in Pristina after Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022 as a symbol of solidarity.
