Trump again targets Fed, seeks removal of Lisa Cook

Trump's administration has accused Cook of making false statements on mortgage agreements, an allegation that prompted a Justice Department investigation last year. This renewed push follows a Supreme Court ruling in June. The court determined that Cook was not given adequate opportunity to respond to the mortgage fraud allegations before Trump announced her dismissal last year. However, the ruling's scope was limited, as the court did not decide whether the fraud allegations themselves constituted sufficient grounds for removal.

Cook's legal team maintains that the accusations are baseless and that there is no legitimate reason to remove her from the Fed. Trump has been a vocal critic of the Federal Reserve, frequently calling for lower interest rates. His criticism has often targeted Cook and former Fed Chair Jerome Powell. However, he has spared current Fed Chair Kevin Warsh. The ongoing dispute over Lisa Cook's position is seen as a test of the Fed's independence. Warsh has stated, "I believe in the rule of law" and "we will abide by the Supreme Court's decision," but has declined to comment on the specifics of Cook's case or its implications for the Fed's autonomy.
