Syria's al-Sharaa hails Erdoğan's role in lifting US sanctions

Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa lauded Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Saudi Arabia for their crucial role in facilitating the lifting of U.S. sanctions on Syria. Al-Sharaa emphasized that their mediation efforts were instrumental in Damascus's reintegration into the international community.

In an interview with Al Jazeera television, al-Sharaa credited President Erdoğan and Saudi Arabia for mediating with then-U.S. President Donald Trump last year to end the sanctions. He noted that Washington had previously issued General License 25 and provided exemptions under the Caesar Act to support Syria's recovery efforts.

Al-Sharaa highlighted Türkiye's ongoing commitment to a political solution in Syria, which he stated must safeguard the country's territorial integrity and facilitate the return of displaced Syrians. The praise comes as Syria seeks to rebuild and re-establish its international standing.
