Syrian Democratic Forces Announce Dissolution, Integration into State Structures

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a pivotal multi-ethnic alliance that rose to prominence fighting the Islamic State (IS), announced their dissolution and integration into Syrian state structures. This move marks the end of an era for the U.S.-backed coalition, which has been a key actor in the complex Syrian civil war for over a decade.

Established in October 2015 during the height of IS's expansion, the SDF united various local militias, including Kurdish, Arab, Assyrian, Syriac, and Turkmen fighters. Under the command of General Mazlum Abdi and with crucial U.S. military and financial support, the alliance became the primary ground partner for the international coalition against IS.

The SDF achieved significant military victories, most notably expelling IS from its de facto Syrian capital of Raqqa in October 2017 and culminating their campaign with the defeat of the last IS stronghold in Al Baghouz in March 2019. This territorial victory against the extremist group led the SDF to control nearly 30% of Syria, including fertile agricultural lands and major oil fields.

Within this territory, known to Kurds as Rojava, the SDF established an autonomous civil administration based on principles of democratic confederalism, ecological sustainability, and gender equality. However, their consolidation of power also raised alarms in neighboring Turkey, which viewed the SDF as an extension of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The SDF's decision to dissolve and integrate into the Syrian state signals a significant shift in the region's geopolitical landscape.
