Taichung Contemporary Art Exhibition features cross-generational works by 356 artists

The 28th Taichung Contemporary Art Exhibition has opened at the Dadun Cultural Center, presenting a broad spectrum of artistic talent with 356 participating artists. This year's exhibition spans multiple generations, from the 78-year-old calligrapher Zhou Heshan to Huang Yu-chen, a student from the National Taiwan University of Arts.

The exhibition features a wide array of creative works, encompassing 11 categories such as ink and color painting, calligraphy, oil painting, watercolor, printmaking, seal carving, sculpture, crafts, and photography. The collection ranges from traditional brushwork to contemporary media, collectively demonstrating the vibrant artistic output of Taichung.

Chen Jia-jun, Director of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, emphasized the significance of having artists from different generations exhibit side-by-side. "The encounter and dialogue between two generations makes 'contemporary' more than just a display of artistic form," she stated. This intergenerational exchange is a key theme, allowing for a dynamic conversation about art and its evolution.

Notable participants include calligrapher Zhou Heshan, who continues to create art at 78 and won a bronze medal in the national calligraphy exhibition. Huang Yu-chen, a student in the Department of Painting and Calligraphy at the National Taiwan University of Arts, has received accolades such as the top prize in ink and color painting at the Taichung Dàdūn Art Exhibition and the New Artist award at the 2025 Japan International Public Art Exhibition. The exhibition also highlights artists like Gao Lian-yong, whose seal carvings transform images of Taiwanese snacks into art, and photographer He Yong-shun, whose work "Guard" captures scenes of farming and livestock.
