Taichung 'Kidnapping' Revealed as Birthday Prank; Friends Face Charges for Causing Alarm

What appeared to be a street kidnapping in Taichung, Taiwan, with threats of gunfire, was revealed to be an elaborate birthday prank orchestrated by friends. The incident began when multiple individuals were seen forcefully escorting a man into a car, leading witnesses to call the police. The situation escalated when the group allegedly threatened to shoot if the man did not comply.

Police responded swiftly, arriving at the scene to find no signs of a struggle but quickly obtained surveillance footage. The video showed seven young people in their early twenties using three cars to take a man, identified as the birthday celebrant, by force. The friends intended to take him to Longjing to watch the night view and celebrate his birthday. However, the birthday man, aware of his friends' penchant for pranks, resisted, fearing he would be teased if he got into the car willingly.

Upon being notified by the police, the group stopped their plan and cooperated with authorities. Investigations confirmed it was not a genuine kidnapping but a misunderstanding. Nevertheless, two individuals involved in physically pulling the man into the car may face charges under the Social Order Maintenance Act for actions that could cause public panic and misunderstanding.
