Taichung mayoral candidates trade barbs over policy credit

A political spat has erupted in Taichung as Democratic Progressive Party mayoral candidate Ho Hsin-chun directly challenged incumbent Mayor Lu Shiow-yen's assertion that Lu and former mayor Chiang Chi-chen have been "leading the way" on city policies, with Ho claiming her own initiatives were merely followed by the current administration.

During the formation of her campaign committee, Ho was asked about Lu's statement. She retorted that key policies, such as the free school lunch program for elementary and middle school students, were first proposed by her. Ho accused Lu's administration of lagging behind and only implementing the policy much later, sarcastically remarking, "Thank you for following suit." She also pointed out that Chiang Chi-chen had never mentioned the policy.

Lu had previously stated that she and Chiang had been "leading the way" in terms of policy and organization, implying that Ho's campaign was struggling and merely catching up. Lu also commented on the perceived disorganization of Ho's team, suggesting they were "a bit flustered" and "constantly following." Lu added that while elections are competitive, she respected Ho's efforts to follow her lead.
