Taichung motorcyclist's sudden turn causes crash; rider flees scene unaware

A startling incident occurred at an intersection in Taichung City, Taiwan, where a female motorcyclist's abrupt right turn caused a serious accident. The rider, identified as Ms. Lin, was traveling in the inner lane of Hsiehhsi Road. Approaching the intersection with Hsiehhsi Street, she suddenly swerved right at a sharp angle without using her turn signal or moving to the outer lane.

This sudden maneuver left Ms. Yang, a motorcyclist traveling behind her in the same direction, with no time to react. Ms. Yang braked sharply, lost control of her motorcycle, and fell heavily. Fortunately, she sustained only abrasions and bruises and was not in life-threatening condition. The at-fault rider, Ms. Lin, continued on her way, seemingly unaware that her actions had caused another rider to crash.

Responding officers from the Third Precinct's traffic division, aided by surveillance and dashcam footage provided by helpful citizens, quickly identified Ms. Lin. When confronted with the evidence, she expressed shock, stating she had been wearing headphones and listening to her phone's navigation, and had no idea anyone had fallen. She repeatedly apologized upon realizing her impulsive turn had led to Ms. Yang's injury.

Police pointed out that drivers making right turns at intersections must signal at least 30 meters in advance and move to the outermost lane before turning. Ms. Lin faces penalties for failing to signal and for leaving the scene of an accident, in addition to potential civil and criminal liabilities for Ms. Yang's injuries and damaged motorcycle.
