Taichung MRT Blue Line's First Major Construction Phase Begins

Construction has officially begun on the first civil engineering contract for the Taichung Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Blue Line's elevated section. A groundbreaking ceremony was held for the initial phase, which spans about 2.49 kilometers and connects Taichung Port Station, Wuhu Elementary School Station, and Tong-Hsiao Hospital Station.

Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen attended the ceremony, emphasizing that the Blue Line, along with the existing Green Line, will form a crucial "golden cross" axis for the city's transportation network. She also mentioned that the second phase, covering five stations, is slated to start construction before the end of the year, expressing hope for the possibility of opening some completed sections earlier.

The project's first phase, designated BC11, involves the construction of elevated bridges, the civil engineering for the three stations, and related electromechanical facilities. The total cost for this segment is approximately 11.958 billion New Taiwan dollars, with a contract duration of over five years. The projected completion year for this section is 2031.

Officials stated that local community engagement sessions will be held to inform residents about the construction process and traffic management plans. These sessions aim to address public concerns and build local consensus. The construction will proceed with necessary steps such as right-of-way acquisition, surveying, tree relocation, utility line transfers, and the erection of construction fences.
