Taichung's Fourth District Sees Political Shift as Former DPP Councilor Backs Independent Candidate

A political shift is brewing in Taichung's fourth electoral district as former Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) councilor Weng Mei-chun has declared her support for independent candidate Wang Chao-kun.

This endorsement introduces a significant variable into the race for the five available council seats in the Fengyuan and Houli districts. The current council includes four members from the DPP and KMT, while a former Taiwan People's Party councilor has transitioned to a national legislative role. Eight candidates have announced their intention to run, including incumbents, newcomers, and those from smaller parties.

Weng Mei-chun, who previously served as a DPP councilor, lost her seat in the last election. Her decision to support Wang Chao-kun, an independent candidate, comes after her own party's nominees were unsuccessful. Wang himself was disqualified from the previous election due to a legal issue but is now seeking to re-enter politics.

Wang's base in Houli, combined with Weng's endorsement, could sway votes traditionally aligned with the KMT and DPP. While the DPP initially appeared to have a strong position with two nominated candidates, incumbent councilor Xie Zhi-zhong acknowledged that complacency could be his biggest challenge. Weng has pledged to continue serving constituents through her service office, even if Wang is elected.
