Tainan hit by heavy morning rain, Rende and Yongkang see over 46mm hourly rainfall, multiple areas flooded

Tainan was hit by torrential rain early on August 23, leading to significant flooding in multiple areas. The storm, influenced by a strong southwest monsoon and a low-pressure trough, caused hourly rainfall rates to surge, with some districts recording over 46 millimeters.

Districts such as Yongkang and Rende experienced particularly heavy downpours. In Yongkang, the area under the Dayao interchange experienced flooding, with water levels reaching half a tire's height in some sections of Yongkang High 1st and 2nd Streets and Zhongzheng Road. The Yongkang police set up warning lines to manage the situation. The intersection of Dayao East Road and Yongda Road 1st Section in Yongkang also saw about 15 to 20 centimeters of water, leading to road closures and traffic diversions.

Due to the severe weather, the Tainan city government announced the suspension of work and classes for the day. The Central Weather Administration reported that several districts, including South, Central-West, North, Yongkang, Rende, Xinshi, Guiren, Xigang, and Anding, recorded hourly rainfall exceeding 30 millimeters. The South, Central-West, and North districts surpassed 50 millimeters, contributing to the widespread flooding reported across the city.
