Taipei Mayor Dodges Debate Invitation, Critic Slams 'Fear of Speaking'

Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an deflected a public invitation for a debate on city affairs from Democratic Progressive Party candidate Shen Po-yang, stating he is "explaining city policies every day."

Chiang made the remarks on Monday while attending an event honoring neighborhood chiefs for their work in promoting city policies. When asked about Shen's challenge, Chiang responded cryptically, referencing "Chuan Liu" (referring to New Taipei City Mayor Hou Yu-ih's running mate, Li Ssu-chuan) and stating, "Chuan Liu flows endlessly." He added that he explains city affairs to the public daily and introduces new policies at appropriate times, citing recent initiatives in childcare and the upcoming completion of the Xinyi East Extension project.

However, author Ku Ling offered a sharp critique of Chiang's stance. Posting on Facebook, Ku Ling sarcastically commented, "How would Young Master Wan-an dare to debate Shen Po-yang on city affairs? As soon as he opens his mouth, his approval rating will drop by 10%!"

Shen Po-yang, a legislator, has been actively campaigning and seeking to engage Chiang in a public discussion about the city's governance. Chiang's response suggests a strategy of avoiding direct confrontation, focusing instead on highlighting his administration's ongoing projects and policies.
