Taitung County Launches Orienteering Race to Combine Sports and Tourism

Taitung County is set to host the "2026 Taitung Orienteering Race," an event designed to blend athletic competition with tourism. The county government unveiled the initiative at a press conference, featuring orienteering national athlete Lin Guan-yu, who introduced the sport's characteristics and highlighted the planned race routes.

The event will center around Taitung Forest Park, connecting forest, lake, and coastal scenery. Participants will navigate using maps, discovering natural sites like Pipa Lake and the coastline while experiencing the unique exploration aspect of orienteering. County Magistrate Rao Ching-ling emphasized that orienteering is more than a sport; it's a way to explore the region, encouraging people to rediscover Taitung's natural beauty and cultural charm.

The race is scheduled for October 3rd in Taitung Forest Park and is now open for registration. Two main categories are available: an "Individual Competition" focused on timed challenges with sequential checkpoints, and a "Double Experience Group" emphasizing shared journeys with a point-based system, allowing pairs to strategically choose checkpoints. Both categories aim to offer a novel way to experience sports, tourism, and local culture.

In addition to the race, four distinct tour packages are offered, exploring areas such as Beinan Cultural Park, Taitung city, and Chenggong Township. These tours delve into indigenous culture, local cuisine, hot spring experiences, and artisan workshops, inviting participants to use the orienteering event as a starting point for a deeper exploration of Taitung.
