Taiwan Army Eyes Mass Production of 246 New Reconnaissance Vehicles Starting 2028

Taiwan's Army is moving closer to the mass production of its domestically developed reconnaissance tactical wheeled vehicle, with plans to procure 246 units between 2028 and 2033. This initiative is part of the Ministry of National Defense's five-year force development plan, as detailed in its mid-year list of controlled military equipment.

The development, known as the 'Iron Cavalry Project,' began based on the Army's operational requirements outlined in 2021. The 209th Factory of the Armaments Bureau is responsible for the overall design and system integration, with support from the Industrial Technology Research Institute for powertrain and chassis systems, and the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology for optoelectronic reconnaissance systems. A prototype was completed in 2022, publicly unveiled in 2023, and initial operational testing concluded in late 2024.

These vehicles boast a four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering design, powered by a 205-horsepower engine capable of reaching 100 km/h with a range of approximately 500 kilometers. They are equipped to handle challenging terrain, including 60% gradients, 0.45-meter vertical obstacles, and 0.7-meter water depths, supported by a central tire inflation system for rapid adaptation to different environments.

Equipped with an integrated, liftable optoelectronic reconnaissance system offering day and night observation up to 12 kilometers, the vehicle also features a 12.7mm remote weapon station with a dual-axis stabilization system for firing on the move. Additional features include smoke grenade launchers, an armored crew compartment, and communication systems to relay battlefield imagery to command centers. The Ministry of National Defense has emphasized that these vehicles are designated for reconnaissance units within combined armed battalions, tasked with ground search, alert, cover, and counter-attack missions, and are not intended to replace the existing Humvee fleet.
