Taiwan braces for thunderstorms and heavy rain, with muggy conditions expected

Taiwan can expect intermittent showers and thunderstorms on Monday, with the Central Weather Administration warning of potential heavy rain in southern areas. High temperatures will persist, reaching up to 36 degrees Celsius in central, northern, and eastern parts of the island, creating muggy conditions. Residents are advised to stay hydrated to avoid heatstroke.

The forecast indicates that the southwest wind will bring scattered showers and thunderstorms to central and southern Taiwan. The southern region may experience localized heavy downpours. Eastern and northern areas will see partly cloudy skies in the morning with scattered afternoon thunderstorms. Mountainous areas in the north and the greater Taipei region could also see localized heavy downpours.

The wind direction will gradually turn to the southwest, and there will be significant rainfall in the central mountains and south of Chiayi, with a chance of localized heavy rain.

Temperatures will range from 32-33 degrees Celsius in the south to 34-36 degrees Celsius in central, northern, and eastern Taiwan. Some localized Föhn winds are possible in the east. The weather risk company noted that no other tropical systems are expected nearby, with conditions gradually shifting to be influenced by the southwest wind and a low-pressure trough. This means rainfall will likely concentrate in the central and southern regions, as well as mountainous areas, particularly during nighttime and early morning hours.

Air quality is expected to be at an "ordinary" level across most regions, including northern, central, southern, and eastern Taiwan, as well as the outlying islands. However, the prevailing southwest wind may cause pollutants to accumulate slightly in western areas. The ultraviolet index will be high, reaching a "dangerous" level in Yilan, Hualien, and Taitung, prompting advice for sun protection during outdoor activities.
