Taiwan Delegation Led by VP Chiang Ching-chun Attends APPU Meeting in Tokyo

Taiwan's Vice Legislative Speaker Chiang Ching-chun is leading a bipartisan delegation to Tokyo, Japan, to participate in the 88th Council and 54th General Assembly of the Asian Pacific Parliamentarians' Union (APPU).

Representing Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu, Chiang departed early on August 24th, emphasizing the delegation's commitment to parliamentary diplomacy. He stated that the group will seize the opportunity to engage with Japanese parliamentary friends, anticipating in-depth discussions on economic and trade matters, cultural exchanges, and bilateral relations to further solidify friendly ties.

The APPU General Assembly, hosted by Japan this year from August 24th to 26th, centers on the theme "Inter-parliamentary Cooperation to Uphold Free and Open Economic Order and Enhance Supply Chain Resilience." The event includes five formal meetings and two dinner receptions. Taiwan, a crucial player in global supply chains, seeks to leverage the APPU platform to foster dialogue with parliamentarians from across the region.

This initiative aims to deepen cooperation and bolster economic security and supply chain resilience in the Asia-Pacific, especially amidst global supply chain restructuring and economic challenges. Taiwan hosted the 53rd APPU General Assembly in August 2023, where several resolutions were passed, including one proposed by Taiwan on promoting sustainable and safe marine environments in the Asia-Pacific.

The delegation comprises 14 lawmakers from Taiwan's major political parties: the Kuomintang (KMT), the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), and the Taiwan People's Party (TPP). This diverse representation underscores a unified effort to enhance substantive exchanges with APPU member states.
