Taiwan Enhances Special Education in Correctional Schools

Taiwan's Ministry of Education and Ministry of Justice are partnering to bolster special education services within correctional schools. Four institutions, Lixian Middle School, Chengcheng Middle School, Dungpin Middle School, and Mingyang Middle School, will now host distributed resource classes specifically designed for students with disabilities.

This collaboration aims to provide comprehensive support, integrating resources from the Ministry of Education's Central Guidance Group for Special Education. The program will focus on strengthening curricula in areas such as life management, social skills, vocational education, and learning strategies. These efforts are intended to equip students with the necessary abilities to return to mainstream schooling and successfully integrate into society.

Every special education student should receive appropriate support. In addition to resource classes, we also provide special education assistants, relevant professional personnel, and emotional and behavioral support services, and subsidize the enrichment of resource class facilities and teaching materials.

Sun Min-yi, a section chief at the Ministry of Education's National Education Administration, explained that beyond establishing the resource classes, the Central Guidance Group will offer professional development workshops for teachers, on-site guidance, and establish cross-school professional communities. This focus on enhancing the quality of special education courses and instruction will provide students with more comprehensive support services.

For the 2025 academic year, the guidance group and the four correctional schools will jointly develop strategies to address the specific learning needs of students with disabilities. This includes planning courses on life management, social skills, learning strategies, vocational education, and communication training. Curricula will be individualized, offering remedial, functional, and enrichment programs. The initiative also emphasizes strengthening vocational skills certification and social skills development to prepare students for future academic, employment, and social reintegration. Teachers from Mingyang and Chengcheng middle schools shared positive experiences, noting improved student outcomes through curriculum adjustments and collaborative learning strategies.
