Taiwan Issues High-Temperature Alerts for Five Areas, Warns of Foehn Winds

Taiwan is bracing for intense heat as the Central Weather Administration (CWA) issued high-temperature advisories for five areas on August 10th. Temperatures are predicted to soar to 36 degrees Celsius (96.8 degrees Fahrenheit) or higher, with a possibility of continuous heatwaves in some regions.

Taitung County faces the most severe warning, designated with an orange alert, signifying a high likelihood of experiencing temperatures at or above 36°C for an extended period. Meanwhile, Taipei City, New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, and Hualien County are placed under yellow alerts, indicating temperatures will reach 36°C or above.

The CWA also cautioned about the potential for foehn winds, a warm and dry wind, to occur in the eastern and southeastern parts of the island due to the influence of southwesterly airflow and descending air. Residents are strongly advised to minimize non-essential outdoor activities, especially during peak heat hours. Key recommendations include wearing sunscreen, drinking plenty of water, and seeking cool, well-ventilated indoor environments.

Furthermore, the administration urged special attention to vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, individuals with chronic illnesses, and those working outdoors. Measures such as using fans or ice packs are suggested for personal and environmental cooling. The CWA also advised implementing windbreaks and water spraying to mitigate potential agricultural damage caused by the hot conditions.
