Taiwan issues sea warning for Typhoon No. 12; eastern regions brace for heavy rain, north for extreme heat

Taiwan's Central Weather Administration issued a sea warning late on October 23 for Typhoon No. 12, forecasting its most significant impact on October 24-25. The eastern regions of Hualien and Taitung are anticipating heavy rainfall, while areas in the north and center of the island could face extreme high temperatures and föhn winds.

Typhoon No. 12 will gradually strengthen, and its wind field will gradually expand.

The typhoon's center was located approximately 680 kilometers southeast of Eluanbi at 11 p.m. on October 23, moving west-northwest at speeds of 25 to 28 kilometers per hour. The storm's central pressure was 998 hectopascals, with maximum wind speeds near the center at 18 meters per second and a seven-level wind radius extending 60 kilometers.

The initial sea warning covers the Bashi Channel and the waters around Dongsha Island. Forecasters predict the typhoon will gradually intensify and its wind field will expand. After passing through the Bashi Channel on October 24, it is expected to move steadily towards the waters southwest of Taiwan on October 25, and then towards the coast of Guangdong, China, by the evening of the same day. The likelihood of a land warning being issued for Taiwan is considered low.

Eastern Taiwan and the Hengchun Peninsula are prone to localized heavy rain or torrential rain, and southern Taiwan will have localized heavy rain.

Forecasters advise that October 24 will see the typhoon approaching, with localized brief showers expected in eastern Taiwan and the Hengchun Peninsula. Western areas will be mostly cloudy to sunny with high temperatures, and the northern regions should be wary of föhn winds. Mountain areas south of Hsinchu may experience isolated afternoon thunderstorms. From the evening of October 24 through October 25, the typhoon's influence will be most pronounced, with heavy to torrential rain possible in Hualien, Taitung, the Hengchun Peninsula, and southern Taiwan. Northern and central regions are expected to remain largely dry and sunny, with a particular warning for extreme heat and föhn winds on October 25. Coastal areas and islands will experience significantly increased winds, with gusts potentially reaching levels 8 to 9, and wave heights exceeding 3 meters are expected along the northern coast, eastern Taiwan, southern Taiwan, and Penghu.
