Taiwan Man Jailed for Stalking Colleague, Sniffing Her Belongings

A man in Taichung, Taiwan, has been sentenced to three months in prison for stalking and harassing a female colleague, a court ruled. The sentence, which can be commuted to a fine, addresses a pattern of behavior that left the victim in a state of prolonged anxiety.

According to the court's findings, the man developed feelings for his colleague in 2023 but pursued her through inappropriate means. He began tailing her home, learning her address, and subsequently appeared near her residence late at night. This behavior caused the victim significant distress.

In one particularly disturbing incident captured on surveillance footage, the man was seen approaching the woman's parked scooter late at night. He picked up her helmet, brought it to his face, and sniffed it repeatedly. He then proceeded to open a shoe cabinet and sniff her shoes. The victim, reviewing her security camera footage, was horrified by these actions.

The harassment continued. On another occasion, the man was again seen outside the woman's home, sniffing her shoes. Fearing for her safety, the victim reported the incidents to the police. The man confessed to his actions, and prosecutors charged him with continuous stalking and harassment based on the victim's testimony and the surveillance evidence.

The Taichung District Court acknowledged the man's confession but noted his failure to reach a settlement or obtain forgiveness from the victim. The court emphasized that as a member of a society governed by law, he should respect others' freedom of association and life. His actions, driven by personal emotional needs, caused fear and disrupted the victim's normal life and social activities. The sentence reflects the severity of his conduct while considering his admission of guilt.
