Taiwan Police Arrest 20-Year Serial Burglar After Convent Intrusion Attempt

A 47-year-old man, with a two-decade-long criminal record of burglaries across Taiwan, has been arrested in Hualien after attempting to infiltrate a Catholic convent. The serial offender was spotted by a migrant worker scaling the convent's roof and attempting to enter through a second-floor window.

When confronted, the man falsely claimed he was sent by a superior to repair doors and windows. He then fled the scene in a BMW after the migrant worker went to alert others. Police quickly identified and apprehended the suspect the following day. He faces charges of trespassing and attempted burglary, though no injuries or property damage were reported.

This latest incident adds to a long list of targets, which include numerous universities, government offices, and churches throughout Taiwan. The suspect, who has a background in mechanical repair, reportedly fell into debt after business failures and resorted to theft. He has previously stolen millions of New Taiwan dollars from various locations.

Despite his extensive criminal history and claims of "pathological kleptomania," courts have consistently rejected his defense. Judges have noted his selective targeting of public and religious institutions and his clear recollection of events, indicating he possesses the capacity to understand and control his actions. He has served multiple prison sentences for his repeated offenses.
