Taiwan President laments budget delay, warns against harming national interests

Taipei, Taiwan – President Lai Ching-te voiced his dismay over the stalled national budget, stating that the legislature has never before failed to pass essential funding halfway through the year. He stressed that while political competition is inherent in a democracy, it should not come at the expense of the nation's and its people's interests.

Lai specifically pointed to a proposal that seeks to freeze NT$44.2 billion in economic ministry funds over the next six years. These funds are earmarked for fostering the development of the drone industry, a sector Lai deems crucial for Taiwan's future. He expressed his frustration, calling the proposal "helpless."

Political competition is inevitable, but the interests of the people and the nation cannot be destroyed.

The president reiterated the government's commitment to supporting small and medium-sized enterprises in developing the drone sector. He noted that while the Ministry of National Defense is the primary user of drones, the Ministry of Economic Affairs plays a vital role in nurturing the industry. Lai emphasized that the government's role is to clear obstacles and pave the way for businesses, ensuring sustainable and balanced economic growth.

Earlier, the government had proposed a special budget of NT$210 billion for drone procurement as part of national defense initiatives. Although a previous proposal for drone-related budgets was deleted, the government remains dedicated to advancing the drone industry. Lai urged that political disputes should not impede progress on initiatives vital for national security and economic development.
