Taiwan reports anomalous AI-powered cyberattack

Taiwanese authorities have identified an "anomalous attack" on government systems that employed a sophisticated blend of human hackers and artificial intelligence agents. The cyber intrusion, detected in July, utilized AI tools, including the open-source personal assistant OpenClaw, alongside traditional human-led operations.

The Ministry of Digital Affairs confirmed that the attacks originated from abroad, though the specific country of origin remains undisclosed. Cybersecurity specialists from Taiwan's National Institute of Cyber Security initiated alerts and investigations on July 20. The ministry stated that the scope, methods, and sources of the attack have been thoroughly investigated, and affected agencies have completed their response measures.

In response to the incident, Taiwanese authorities have developed updated recommendations for defending against AI-assisted cyber threats and have intensified monitoring of government information systems. This event follows a pattern of cyber threats targeting Taiwan, with the island's National Security Bureau reporting a six percent increase in attacks on critical infrastructure in 2025 compared to the previous year. While Taiwan has repeatedly accused China of hybrid warfare tactics, including cyberattacks, the ministry did not attribute this specific AI-powered attack to any single nation.
