Taiwan's Sun Moon Lake sees 24-fold surge in invasive snakehead fish

Sun Moon Lake, a popular tourist destination in Taiwan, is grappling with an unprecedented explosion of invasive snakehead fish, often dubbed the "lake's bully." This year, authorities have electrofished a staggering 20,909 snakehead fish, a dramatic 24-fold increase from the just over 800 caught last year.

This year, the snakehead fish fry have 'exploded,' with electrofishing efforts this year already exceeding 20,000. This is a 24-fold increase compared to last year.

The Nantou County government attributes this "great outbreak" to the recent plum rain season. Heavy rainfall caused the lake's water levels to rise rapidly. This coincided with the snakehead fish's breeding season, and the rising waters created ideal conditions with abundant vegetation along the shore, providing excellent cover and habitat for spawning.

Officials noted that the lake had experienced a significant drop in water levels during the dry season, leading to the growth of plants along the banks. The subsequent rapid rise in water created a perfect storm for the fish's reproduction. The sheer number of young fish, ranging from 5 to 17 centimeters, caught in recent operations highlights the scale of the problem.

This year's plum rain season saw the lake's water level rise rapidly, coinciding with the snakehead fish spawning season. The surrounding waters were filled with vegetation, providing excellent cover and habitat for reproduction, leading to a surge in the number of fish fry.

Despite the surge, the county government vows to continue its electrofishing operations to curb the snakehead fish population. Recent operations have been particularly fruitful, with one session yielding 5,704 fish, the highest single-day catch this year. The ongoing efforts aim to prevent the invasive species from further disrupting the lake's delicate ecosystem and harming native fish.
