Taiwan’s Taichung mayoral candidates prepare campaign headquarters with presidential backing

Taiwan’s Taichung mayoral campaign is moving into a more visible phase, with both major-party candidates preparing their headquarters ahead of the year-end local elections.

Democratic Progressive Party candidate Ho Hsin-chun plans to hold the formal opening of her headquarters on Sept. 12 on Section 2 of Wuquan West Road. President Lai Ching-te is expected to attend and offer his support. Former President Tsai Ing-wen will visit the headquarters earlier, on Sept. 8, for an opening event.

Ho said the headquarters should be more than a campaign office. She described it as an open and welcoming space, with a picture-book area, a camping area and outdoor facilities. A well-known theater troupe will perform from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. on opening day for families.

Kuomintang candidate Chiang Chi-chen plans to use his “Flagship City Work Station” on Section 2 of Taiwan Boulevard as his campaign headquarters. His campaign office said the formal inauguration would take place around late September or early October.
