Taiwan's Tainan reservoirs overflow after heavy rains

Continuous heavy rainfall has led to significant water accumulation in Tainan, Taiwan, with five reservoirs now overflowing. Nanhua Reservoir has reached its full capacity of 100%, naturally spilling over.

The region has experienced intense downpours due to a strong southwest monsoon and a low-pressure system. This has boosted reservoir levels considerably. Nanhua Reservoir and Hutoupi Reservoir are both at 100% capacity and are spilling over. Mirror Reservoir, Yanshui Pier Reservoir, and Deyuan Pier Reservoir are also releasing water.

Authorities have issued alerts for residents in downstream areas, including Yujing and Nanhua districts near Nanhua Reservoir, and Xinying and Xinhua districts near Hutoupi Reservoir. Warnings are also in place for Zuozhen, Nanhua, and Shanshang districts near Mirror Reservoir, and Xinhua and Xinying districts near Yanshui Pier Reservoir. Deyuan Pier Reservoir has a release flow of 85 cms, with the alert area being Liuying District.

Yesterday, the Ushan Reservoir catchment area recorded the highest rainfall at 162 millimeters, with Nanhua Reservoir receiving 75.3 millimeters. Zengwen Reservoir, the largest in terms of storage capacity, received 55.8 millimeters, increasing its water storage rate from 84.93% to 86.01%. Nanhua Reservoir's immediate water level reached 180.01 meters, exceeding its full water level of 180 meters, with an effective storage capacity of 81.86 million cubic meters.
