Taiwan simulates repelling Chinese landing in major military drills

Taiwan's navy mobilized missile-carrying ships, launchers, and special forces on Saturday to simulate repelling a Chinese landing attempt. The exercise, conducted in the southern port city of Kaohsiung, is a key component of Taiwan's annual Han Kuang military drills.

President Lai Ching-te attended the drills, observing from the command bridge of a Kuang Hua VI missile boat. He addressed the naval personnel, stressing the importance of coordination and combat readiness to safeguard national sovereignty and security. "I urge you to respond with determination during the maneuvers and to strengthen coordination and mutual understanding, as only then can you cope with all kinds of situations and safeguard, with firm combat power, the sovereignty of the country and the security of the people," Lai stated.

The exercise involved rapid deployment of vessels designed for close-quarters combat, capable of launching anti-ship missiles. Special forces also conducted a coastal defense drill on a nearby beach. Kaohsiung, a major naval base and home to critical energy infrastructure, is considered a priority target in the event of a conflict.

The Han Kuang exercises, running until August 14, are designed to test Taiwan's preparedness for a potential invasion by China, which claims the island as its own. The drills encompass various scenarios, including anti-blockade operations and the protection of vital infrastructure.
