Taiwan to rehearse maritime 'counter-blockade' drills in annual military exercises

Taiwan's upcoming annual Han Kuang military exercises, scheduled from August 5 to 14, will feature maritime "counter-blockade" maneuvers for the first time. This significant addition reflects the island's heightened security concerns amid growing Chinese activity in waters east of Taiwan.

According to Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense, the drills will involve the Navy and Coast Guard collaborating on missions related to maritime law enforcement, patrol, and protection. The objective is to bolster the security of sea lanes and ensure the resilience of critical supply chains, particularly for energy resources like liquefied natural gas, which is Taiwan's primary electricity source.

The goal is to strengthen the security of maritime communication lines and the resilience of the replenishment of essential materials.

Officials stated that joint intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance mechanisms, along with coordinated command and control, will be employed. The inclusion of counter-blockade exercises is a direct response to China's increased deployment of coast guard vessels and other government ships in the waters east of the island since June.

Experts suggest these Chinese operations could be a precursor to a potential quarantine aimed at inspecting or intercepting commercial vessels bound for Taiwan. The Han Kuang exercises will simulate realistic combat environments, focusing on scenarios such as resisting enemy landings, defending key facilities, and prolonged combat. The military emphasized its commitment to realistic training to deter aggression and maintain regional peace and stability.
