Ko Wen-je registers for reelection with KMT and TPP support, vows to defeat smears and hate

Keelung Mayor Hsieh Kuo-liang registered for reelection at 10:08 a.m. on September 1, accompanied by local leaders of the Kuomintang and Taiwan People’s Party, council members, candidates, village chiefs and supporters.

Hsieh is running on the campaign theme “Keelung has love, because we are doing this for the next generation.” He said his administration had delivered practical results during more than three years in office and would firmly push back against what he called smears and hatred.

He pointed to transport and pedestrian improvements as evidence of that record. Hsieh said Keelung had become one of Taiwan’s safest cities for traffic, with the country’s lowest accident figures for pedestrians and vehicles. The city also expanded levelled arcade walkways in central areas, the night market, Miaokou and along the Tianliao riverbank.

Hsieh also cited investment awards for Bisha Fishing Port and an almost seven-percentage-point rise in sewage-system coverage. He said the city had planned to bring artificial intelligence industries and data centres to Keelung, while the finalized Keelung Metro project would support development around Wudu, Qidu and Liudu industrial areas.

The mayor additionally promoted a practical second-phase metro plan that would extend the route to Maijin Road without eliminating rail services. He said the extension would eventually allow older people and patients to travel directly to Keelung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. Facing attacks and a recall campaign, Hsieh said he would answer “love and inclusion” with determination and predicted victory on November 28.
