Taiwanese Man's Property Seized Over Unpaid Traffic Fines

A man in Taichung, Taiwan, who amassed over 225,000 NT dollars in fines for serious traffic offenses, has had his inherited property seized by authorities. The individual faced penalties for refusing breathalyzer tests multiple times and for driving without a valid license between October 2021 and January 2023.

The Administrative Enforcement Agency's Taichung branch initiated enforcement actions after the fines were transferred. Initial investigations revealed the man had no bank deposits, was insured through a local office, and the vehicles he used for violations were not registered in his name, presenting a challenge to collecting the debt.

However, a breakthrough occurred when the agency discovered the man had inherited property from his father. In July, the agency placed a seizure order on the real estate. This action prompted the man to contact the Taichung branch within two weeks, expressing concern that the seizure would jeopardize a pending sale of the property and lead to contractual penalties.

Seeking to avoid further financial strain, the man requested a payment installment plan. After considering his ability to pay and the need to secure public funds, the Taichung branch agreed to allow him to pay 12,000 NT dollars monthly, starting in July. The property remains under seizure until the full amount is paid.
