Taiwanese Public Broadcasters Face Major Budget Cuts Amidst Political Dispute

A significant budget cut and freeze proposal targeting the Public Television Service (PTS) has ignited strong criticism from legal and entertainment figures in Taiwan. Legislators are seeking to reduce or freeze over 1 billion New Taiwan dollars (NT$) from PTS's 2025 budget, representing nearly half of the government's allocated funding. Additionally, the proposal includes the complete elimination of subsidies for TaiwanPlus, the nation's international broadcasting platform.

Lawyer Lin Chih-chun publicly denounced the legislative move on Facebook, calling it "disgusting." He argued that the blue and white parties are obstructing PTS board appointments and then using this as a pretext to freeze the public broadcaster's budget. "You tell me, aren't the blue and white parties disgusting?" he wrote.

Renowned director Wang Hsiao-ti echoed these sentiments, expressing her "helplessness" and questioning the next steps for those who oppose the joint budget cuts by the Kuomintang and Taiwan People's Party. She suggested that mere complaints or signature campaigns would be futile. Digital creator Hou Tsung-yu, commenting on Wang's post, indicated that the year-end elections would be a crucial indicator, serving as a "midterm exam" for legislators. He emphasized the importance of using the ballot box to voice public opinion, urging voters not to support parties that act arrogantly after elections.

The PTS board and management issued an urgent statement warning that the proposed cuts would severely impact the public media's operations. Furthermore, 53 frontline producers from PTS, PTS Taiwan, and PTS Taigi have launched a joint petition. Lin Hsi-hui, president of the Taiwan Television Production Industry Association, penned a lengthy post on Facebook expressing his deep sorrow and frustration over the situation, lamenting the "tragic industry" for both the film and television sector and the public broadcasting group.
