Taiwanese Singer Chen Ying-chieh Dies at 72; Yu Mei-jen Confirms News

Taiwanese Hokkien music icon Chen Ying-chieh passed away on the evening of August 12 at the age of 72, with her funeral scheduled for August 30. The news of her death was first confirmed by television host Yu Mei-jen, leading many to question the silence of Hsu Chang-te, who had long managed Chen's medical affairs and charity donations.

Yu Mei-jen and Hsu Chang-te revealed in a joint interview that they had completed a handover of responsibilities three months earlier. Hsu explained that he decided to pass on his role as Chen's spokesperson due to his emotional nature, finding it difficult to face the situation. Yu Mei-jen, with her experience in handling such matters and a large social media following, was deemed the more suitable person to manage external communications.

Hsu Chang-te recounted being at the hospital on the night of Chen's passing after receiving a call from her doctor. Upon entering the room, he witnessed medical staff preparing to attend to Chen. He retreated to the hallway to compose a message, which he then sent to Yu Mei-jen shortly before Chen's brother confirmed her death at approximately 7:05 PM.

Reflecting on his role, Hsu expressed a sense of fate, having been present during the final stages of several close friends' lives. He described Chen's deteriorating health in her later months, noting that she was too weak to hold a phone or speak. He recalled a particularly meaningful interaction about two months before her death, when Chen squeezed his hand three times, a response that motivated him to organize one last concert for her. Tragically, two days after that concert on May 31, Chen required intubation and passed away over two months later.
